Verna Aardema has brought the original story closer to the English nursery rhyme by putting in a cumulative refrain and giving the tale the rhythm of The House That Jack Built. Animals are introduced, tension builds and the resolution pours forth as the rhyme builds. A cumulative rhyme relating how Ki-pat brought rain to the drought-stricken Kapiti Plain. Self revives Wilde’s classic creation, the pseudo-tragic figure of Henry Wotton. In Dorian, Will Self transplants Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray to Thatcher’s Britain, following a group of rich, drug-addicted and promiscuous Londoners as their decadent lifestyle leads them into ruin. Exquisite Corpse was, I believe, a transgressive act of literary provocation engineered by Brite herself. Whilst both books should be celebrated and praised as artistic successes, it is Brite’s novel which is truly the more shocking work, by turning the author herself into the Other. Two recent Gothic novels have successfully exposed our cynical attitude towards love relations and our fear of getting too close to the Other: Dorian by Will Self and Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. In recent times it has become commonplace for writers and critics alike to link contemporary gothic narratives with modern day anxieties. There are a lot of typical factors, but shown in a new light. The story itself is an interesting take on fantasy. Otherwise, I enjoyed getting to see her find herself and find ways to stand up to adversity and find a strength she never knew she was capable of. There is a lot of thrust upon emotions in terms of those who acquire her fancy. I wanted there to be more of a background to the emotions. My main complaint about her, was that I don’t think that any of her love interests were believably built up. She finds herself coming into her own with womanhood as well as new-found abilities. She isn’t annoying in a way that some main characters can be. The story revolves around the main character Karla, who is an unassuming teenage girl who finds herself thrust amidst a war, where each side of the fight remains unclear in their true intentions. Possession Of My Soul is written by Kia Carrington-Russell and is the first book in the Three Immortal Blades Series. The original cover price of $2.25 is still less than the Kindle version of today. Author Stephen Manes originally published it in 1983 via Avon Books, but it has been subsequently reprinted in 2012 for Kindle. I recently came across Video War, another work of fiction focused on arcades of the early 80s. The arcade references were enough to make me want to investigate time travel and venture back to the days of attract modes, tokens, and the best hangouts a kid could find! It's a quick read, but it has several interesting sub-plots all taking place against the backdrop of the 80s arcade. I'm not sure I even realized there was such a thing as video game fiction until I picked up Andy Hunt's Final Day at the Westfield Arcade. Video games and arcades don't really inspire reading, which is why we need more video game oriented fiction! I don’t know if I’ve ever read a western, and maybe it means something different in Irish literature, but to me a western means cowboys, not cops!Ĭal was a great character. Tana French referred to The Searcher as “her take on a western”. The Ending:Ĭal decided to stay in Ireland to be a mentor to Trey, and bought her a puppy. When the old men tried to teach Brendan a lesson, he fell from a punch and hit his head and died. Brendan had gotten messed up in cooking meth, and the old men didn’t want that sort of thing in their town. The attackers turned out to be a bunch of the old men that Cal had become friendly with. Trey saves him by shooting one of his attackers in the arm with Cal’s rifle. The next night, Cal gets beat up as well. Her mother had done it, to stop Trey from asking questions about her missing brother. He sends her away and tries to put the mystery behind him, but then one night she shows up on his doorstep beat up. This made Cal nervous, given how much time she had been spending with him alone. Trey is a girl, and Cal thought she was a boy until his neighbor told him. In the final(ish) episode of the Middle Grade Ninja podcast, Chrystal D.
